Shadow exit interviews

What candidates share with us — but never with their employer.

The introductory conversations we hold with candidates often carry exit-interview-level honesty. People talk about obstacles and disappointments that stay hidden from their own employer — either because the company runs no exit interviews at all, or because at the moment of departure honest feedback is no longer comfortable for either side.

The 2024/I Greenovative passes that perspective on. It structures the classic departure reasons: each one comes with a 'given reason' and a 'possible cause behind' it — along the technical, material, professional, organisational and interpersonal axes. The issue closes with a 7-page 'Exit interview guide' appendix covering 20+ specific departure situations and the real reasons that tend to sit behind them.

THE FOUR MAIN THEMES OF THIS ISSUE

01

Shadow exit interviews

Candidates often articulate for the first time during a consulting conversation what they would never say to their own employer. The issue uses this perspective gap as its starting point: what a headhunter regularly hears tends to stay hidden from the leader — even though it is the most accurate source on why colleagues leave.

02

Behind technical and material reasons sit organisational and human ones

Relocation, health, a higher salary elsewhere — these visible reasons are often only the surface. The issue assigns a structure to each typical departure reason: what the 'given reason' is, and what the likely causes behind it are — across the technical, material, professional, organisational and interpersonal axes.

03

Organisational change: growth, generational shift, team turnover

Moving from a family-like company into a larger organisation, losing the original team, a workforce that is too young or too homogeneous — all classic departure-reason clusters. The issue shows why more compensation alone does not solve these, and what subtler leadership decisions sit behind them.

04

Leadership style and emotional dynamics

The leader's personality, mood swings, missing feedback — these belong to the most frequent departure reasons, and they tend to stay hidden the longest. The issue describes specific leadership patterns and the signals by which they can be recognised in time.

WHO IT IS FOR

For B2B industrial middle and senior leaders, HR leaders and managing directors. For anyone who regularly faces a colleague's unexpected resignation — and who would rather not learn the real reason on the day of departure. The 'Exit interview guide' appendix is a practical reference: 20+ situations and the real causes that often sit behind them.
